It's all about the Vikings

All about the Vikings information

There are many sewing techniques like stitches going up and under to ones that go back to the last.To make Viking money containers, simple stitches are fine. However, you must keep your stitches small and even.

Mostly, poor Vikings would wear robes, sandals and rope belts. Usually, wealthy Vikings would wear capes, boots, sword compartments and fur coats. Wealthy Vikings were considered to be "better" than poor Vikings.

There are many different types of sewing but we have lowered the techniques to 4. They include delicate stitch, back stitch, running stitch and blanket stitch. To do these you must be patient, concentrated and determined.

Harry's opinion
''I liked  making mistakes and improving my purse I done running stitch and blanket stitch my purse was grey as well. I had a belt buckle to hold my purse.''

Isabella's Opinion
I think that the sewing was very fun. My favourite part was overall making the purse.

Making an information text box

Today, we learnt how to use the snipping tool and google maps to create a 'where in the world' text box to give some more information on our magical creature.

We had to find the snipping tool and take a picture of the country we chose. Next, we had to make our own word document and pasted the image onto it.

We had to find an image on the internet of tattered paper, and then we had to put the image to the back. The text box was last. It was tricky at first, but we got though it. The trickiest part, for me was trying to send the tattered paper to the back of the map.

We have learnt as well that sometimes you cannot copy a picture because it has been blocked. You could only have access to it by paying for the rights.

Our book is coming along quite well, stay tuned for the final product.

Non Fiction November

During the month of November, we have been writing a non-fiction book.

We are writing in pairs a book about fantastic beasts. In order to do so, we had to look at non chronological reports and assess their components.

In a non-chronological report, we have to mention where the beast is from and provide a map to help the reader locate the country. In our book, we will have a map and a short description next to it. During our Monday ICT lesson, we learned how to use the snipping tool and how to work on Office word in order to make our text appeal to a particular audience.

As you can see, my work in not completed yet, but I am nearly there. It was hard at first to layer all the pictures, but then once I started feeling more confident using Office word and the Snipping tool, it became a lot easier.

Venus class assembly

On the 25th November, Venus class presented their assembly on personification.

The aim of the presentation was to teach to students in the school was is personification as well as show case our work.

We came up with the idea of doing an assembly on Personification when we realised how hard we had worked on our poem. Afterwards, Miss Goulet showed us videos where students had recorded their poems.

It was hard to record our voices, the school is so noisy....

Since it was a bit noisy in the hall, here are the videos and the Prezi we presented.

Programming with scratch

On Monday November 14th, 2016 at the ICT suite, Mars and Venus students have used the software Scratch for the first time.

The aim of the lesson was to make a ball bounce.

I learned that controlling sprites on Scratch isn't so easy as it looks. When I was doing 'bouncing ball', I finished up my instructions, but did not check it every now and then so when I tried it, it sped around the edges. I thought, "that doesn't look like it's bouncing. " I found an error I made and corrected it.

I am happy I learned something and will from now on always

test my program

Poetic pictures

During the last two ICT lessons, Mars class has been working on presenting our personification poems in order to appeal to a certain audience.

We have learned to add an image in the background as well as change the colours of the font in order to make it more interesting. The picture we added onto our work is free or being modified or published. If you select it on Google Images so you know afterwards that you'll be allowed to publish the image. If you do not have the rights, you cannot modify a picture.

Whilst working on our Office word document, we tried to type with both our hands on the keyboard. Evie and I also realised that when there is a red line underneath a word, it means we spelled it wrong. This is very helpful when you need to publish your work, this way we now know that we will not have any spelling mistakes in our work YAY!!

We hope that you like our work and that you find it interesting.

This week, when we commented on our blog, we discovered that comments had to be approved before they could be published. The reason is that there has been inappropriate ones left on our year group blog. Miss Goulet has reported them like you should always do when such thing happens.

This term, as well as learning about Office Word, we learned to be safe online.

Maths shtaM

This last week before Autumn half term has been a busy one in Year 4, and it has barely started!!!

On Monday, students in Miss Goulet's maths class have used Ipads in order to find symmetry in our school yard. It was hard at first, but then with practice we came up with very good pictures.
Louis's very good symmetrical picture
Where would be the line of symmetry?
Had you ever noticed this was symmetrical?

Brooke is taking her work seriously

This is my work... Isn't that cat lovely

Also on Monday, during the ICT lesson, we once again worked on office Word. This time, our task was to insert an image in the background of our text. This we all knew how, but Miss Goulet added a challenge that the image had to be faded in the background. This we struggled, but then took the time to be more familiar with Office Word and in the end we all did it.

Symmetrical task

Everyone in the class was so
focused on their task.
This week in maths, we have worked on Geometry.

It is an equilateral triangle, how many lines of
symmetry could it have??
We first learned about the properties of the polygons then learned about their angles.

Towards the end of the week, we have investigated lines of symmetry in a regular polygon.

We have come up with the result that : if you have a regular quadrilateral you will have four sides  as well as have four lines of symmetry.  Although, if you have an irregular polygon you won't have the same amount of sides and lines of symmetry because if you have a trapezium you have four sides, but only one line of symmetry.

In order to practice identifying lines of symmetry, we went in the ICT suite to play a game where we had to identify the lines of symmetry in order to unlock a safe. Afterwards, we have to complete shapes. It was really fun, if you click on the word game you will be able to access it.

Hope you go and play this game, it is very cool.

Office works!

Younes is trying to type with both hands.
Today in ICT, at first we checked our emails and deleted the ones that we had.
Then, we learned how to use or work out to use Office Word. Afterwards, we typed up the work we have been working on in class.
Imogen can type whilst looking at the screen.

The task in literacy was to write as if we were a friend of Varjak and we would advise him what to do. Here is an example of my work. I chose to write in red because the text is important and I want my audience to understand it is an emergency.

I order to have a good text, I have spelled checked my work. It is easy, Office Word shows you underlined in red the words that are misspelled.

Varjak's quest in the city

In Literacy,  we are learning about Varjak Paw.

This cat has to learn how to fight.

He always gets told off by his big muscly brother as well as by his father. Then, there's his mother saying "Darling wash your paws please".One of the Paw is called Jasmine, every single day she giggles and laughs. Varjak's brother is called Julius; you know he's one of those cats who flexes his muscles and has to talk about it every day and keeps on going on about it. He says "you know if you don't eat you won't grow muscles like me".

Euan tried to draw a city with lots of gloomy details.
Elder paw tells stories about Jalal, he tells them to Varjak.
Varjak listens to the adventurous stories he loves them!

One night Varjak came out to the garden through the cat flap.Elder paw was at the end of the garden,Varjak rushed to him. Then the door opened, the man with the two black cats came in the garden. The man has been in the house before, this Elder Paw mentioned it, but we don't know what he will do to Varjak..... He is the only who can save his family...

Lois wonders if she has shown the city like Varjak would see it.
As part of our literacy lesson, we have drawn what Varjak can see now that he is in the city looking for a "dog" to fight the man. After swapping drawings, we used expanded noun phrases to describe the drawing. It was a fun game to be able to find

Anglo Saxons at the ICT suite

This week we have been looking at the cities that the Anglo-Saxon places and what bits of land they named like Wessex and East Anglia. These were kingdoms where the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes settled.

How we did it is we went on to a reliable website Google maps and found where they all were.

Then,we identified on our map where it was.

Some, were up high north and some were down south by a water source. Most of them were in Wessex and some were not.

Also, some of us took the little man and saw what everyone was doing. We learned that this app is called "street view" and it allows you to see in real the place you are looking at.

The towns we named were Woking ,Oxford,Marston,Oakley and Woolwich. The kingdoms were Northumbria,Mercia,East Anglia,Essex,Kent,Sussex and of course Wessex.

Test your knowledge of Anglo-Saxons

AS part of his homework, Euan chose to prepare a quiz about Anglo-Saxons.

Here is a video of his work.

This year, all homework will be topic based and will consist of a project. In year 4, our topic for this Autumn term is Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Be ready to see many outstanding work presented on this blog.

Festival of Learning 2016

As part of our festival of learning this summer term, parents were invited to watch out cookery shows. Unfortunately, some parents missed the presentation they come to see.

Here are the videos of our shows.

We are really proud to present you work made entirely by the year 4 students, from the script to the editing of the movie. They even created the recipe they are cooking in their shows.

The end result of this project show using and applying of computing and literacy skills.

Try those recipe and leave a comment on your experience enjoying making stir fries.

Lights, camera,wok...Stir-Frying

Is stir frying a healthy way of cooking?

Over the next week, year 4 will be proving it in a video that it is!

On Friday July 8th 2016, we learned how to cut vegetable safely. In order to make a stir fry, you need thin sliced vegetables. It was hard at first, but with the practice, the students were cutting like pros :)
Olivia will not let this carrot win!
This team is proud of their work!

Shhhh.. Lucas is so focused. He takes his time in order to cut precisely and safely.
This week, students worked collaboratively in mixed classes on writing the script for a cookery show. Some students were in charge of writing the script, some on mapping out the story board where as another member was in charge of typing the recipe on the computer.

Lucas and Ameena are organizing how they will film.
Using our resources is always important when writing.
Lilly is using an Ipad to create the movie.
She uses Imovie app.

Converting measurements In maths

Today our maths group continued to work on converting measurements. We have concentrated on length and at last are beginning to get the hang of it. We worked in groups to carry out some physical activities like standing long jump, hop skip and a jump , running long jump and how far we can do the splits!! We took the measurements for each event and then awarded points for who was the best at each event. As we haven't quite finished completing all of the events, we will finish on Monday during our maths lesson.

We will let you know who wins.

Royal Festival Hall !!!

On Friday the 24th of June, some of the students in year 4,5,6 participated in the Royal Festival Hall Orchestra and First access performance . In Orchestra one of the pieces that we played was called The Hall Of The Mountain King . In this piece there was a lot of pizzicato also know as plucking , as well as arco  ( use of bow ) . There was also a lot of other instruments in the Orchestra such as : flutes, oboes, clarinets ,recorders, trumpets and guitar. 🎷🎺🎸🎻🎹

The last piece we played in Orchestra was called spy movie it also uses pizzicato and arco ,many other interments such as violins, trumpets, recorders and other instruments it was extremely fast and at first I  found it hard to keep up but in the end I managed to get the timing right!!! 🎷🎺🎸🎻🎹

In year 4 violins we did are final song it was called rice harvest, the whole song represents a story of refugees that survived and lived to tell the story. Everybody joined in even the music teachers. It was quite hard to keep the timing right because you had to count yourself in with the beat!!!🎷🎺🎸🎻🎹

If it wasn't for Bird Collage we wouldn't of been able to experience this ! Thank you so much I absolutely loved it . 🎷🎺🎸🎻🎹

Learning about money

On Tuesday June 28th, class Mars and Venus participated to an activity offered by Halifax.
During the presentation, we learned how banks work as well as investigated some money problems.

It was a great opportunity to work in mixed Maths, solving worded problems using their knowledge of money. Throughout the year, we have learned about the value of money and practiced our column addition written method. We have used and applied these skills during this activity.

The hardest activity was to evaluate what you can buy with £10, £20 and £50. Poppy would spend £50 on a ticket to a theme park, Eshar would be spending her £50 on a hotel night.

What would you buy with £50?

The Journey of Edward Tulane

We have officially started our last book of the year, it is titled The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.

So far, we have learned that Edward has an array of hats and wears well cut trousers. The China rabbit enjoys winte. It's his favourite season since the sun sets earlier, the doll can then dire his reflection in he window.

As part of our literacy lesson, class Mars and Venus worked collaboratively to create an outfit for Edward.

We first planned our outfit, then used pieces of fabric to put together an elegant wardrobe.

Cakes for Canadian Red Cross

Yesterday,we had a cake stall for the Canadian Red Cross. We are doing this as part of our new homework which links with our new topic for geography,Canada. It's more creative than our usual homework which makes it more fun.Thank you to all the parents who helped raise £40.55 money. Also,a big thank you to our parents who helped us make the cakes. Here is us waiting for some customers.

Friday 17 June 2016

QR codes

As part of our Computing lesson, we have learned to make QR codes.

In topic we are learning about Canada and because our teacher is Canadian she has many stories and pictures for us.

Miss Goulet printed pictures about Canada. I cannot believe she took all of them, she has traveled across Canada. This country is massive!

At the ICT suite, we used reliable websites to find information about the picture we were given. We had to write 5 fun facts. We then went on www.qr-code-generator.com to create a qr code. We will stick the qr code next to the picture so everyone in the class knows about Canada.

The hardest part is when the qr is created you en have to save it as an image so it can be printed. Miss Goulet had asked that the qr code is small, so I had to inset the image on a word document to then rsize it.

I was so excited to learn all this that once I got home, I created a qr code for our blog! Here it is. Scan to try it!

Empty classroom day

On June 17th, the teachers had the challenge to teach without being in the classroom.

Miss Hemmings and Miss Goulet planned a maths a literacy lessons all happening outdoor.

During our maths lesson, there were 5 activities all related to the number 100. In the various tasks, we had to calculate the perimeter, the area, convert units of measure, 2D shapes, time and symmetry.

It was fun to practice maths in context and to work both classes together.

We also had to work in teams.

After break time, we stayed outside to continue our learning about outdoor. Whilst Venus class did a SWAC activity, Mars started their literacy lesson.
The literacy lesson was very cool and different. It was interesting to write about our favourite outdoor place. For once, we did not have success criteria and we were allowed to write as we like it!!

Thanks for the great day! We should be outdoor more often!

Cooperative learning in maths

Miss Goulet's maths lesson worked on their skills with co-ordinates in order to create a battle ship inspired board game. Using their knowledge of longships, they designed boats in the shape of what the Vikings used to sail to England.

Once we have made our ge, we asked students in Miss Hemings to play with us. This way both classes practiced using co-ordinates. It was a nice way to work collaboratively.

They could also enjoy our nice drawings on our boards. They were inspired by Vikings artefacts and had to be symmetrical since it is a requirement in maths.
